How do you handle your emotions without food. Let me say that this one of the principles that you really have to have patience and trust.
The world celebrates with food and it has always been or enemy.
Every time you feel like reaching for food, ask yourself are you really physically hungry?
If you aren’t (and remember I know when I’m really physically hungry when even a carrot sounds good) truly physically hungry try all or any of these suggestions:
Sit with yourself.
What are you feeling?
Could it be that you need something that food wouldn’t have accomplished anyway?
Write about what you are feeling.
Write an “imaginary” letter to someone that you want to say something to but aren’t ready to do face to face right now.
Talk about your feelings into a tape recorder.
You don’t have to find a solution to any emotions that come up right now. Just get them out. Think about them. Don’t give them any more power over you.
For now, try these things and see if you feel like eating from physical hunger. If you still really don’t feel physical hunger and want to eat something…go ahead…otherwise you might end up “eating around” the actual food that you think you want and thenyou’ll eat that food in addition to all of the other food you really didn’t want.
Discovering and coping with your feelings is an ongoing thing. It really never goes away…it does get a lot easier and you will become more efficient at it the more you practice and trust the process.
