cross your arms, please

Here is a quick exercise I like to introduce to my clients.
It serves as a great visual to remember our ability to change and adopt new behaviors.
Cross your arms (think Mr. Clean).
Now, cross them the other way (inside out).
Weird. Foreign. Awkward. Unnatural.
If you continued to cross your arms this new way enough times, it would become your “natural, innate” way of crossing them. It would be your first response to that request. You wouldn’t even think twice. You would eventually have a difficult, awkward time crossing your arms the original way.
No body knows how many repetitions it takes for a change in behavior to become “habit” or “natural”. Everyone’s time frame is different. What is for sure is that change is possible. The way change becomes permanent is through repetition.
In the beginning you might have to pretend that you have already adopted the new behavior until it becomes natural. That’s okay. Change is good. Change is possible.
Now, cross your arms!
