per·fect
Spelled[adj., n. pur-fikt; v. per-fekt]
adjective
conforming absolutely to the description or definition of an ideal type
excellent or complete beyond practical or theoretical improvement
entirely without any flaws, defects, or shortcomings
accurate, exact, or correct in every detail
Striving for perfection is such a waste of time. Not only a waste of time but a waste of the time you should be spending doing your best to feel your best. When you want everything do be perfect, you can bet that you will fall short of your expectations. When that happens, one bad feeling follows another and it feels as though nothing is going right and the defeatist feelings become a reality. You feel something like this, I bet…”See, I can’t stick to anything or do anything right.”” So-in-so is so perfect, she always seems on-track.” “I can’t believe I STILL cannot fit into my favorite pants.” “What is wrong with me?” “Why can’t I handle my feelings/eating/work/parenting etc. better?” “I started off so well today, what happened?””I thought I could be perfect today.”
When you are thinking negatively, you begin to expect negative of yourself even though you are not consciously doing that. You can’t tackle what life is going to throw you in any positive manner if you think you have to be “perfect” at performing every time. Perfection could mean following a “diet plan”. It could mean having your children always seeing you as the greatest thing since sliced bread, being the most successful employee each day, making the perfect souffle, etc. etc.
Truly, nobody and no body is perfect. What? I wouldn’t want that anyway, really…would you?
Being an individual unlike any other is what will truly give you peace and a sense of accomplishment. If we were all alike, it would be so boring. We would always feel run-of-the-mill. I know when I think that I can do everything that I want to do in a “perfect” way it triggers a “see I knew I couldn’t do this attitude”. That’s not how I want to feel, do you?
You are good enough. You will always be good enough. Smart enough. Pretty enough. Nice enough. And when you feel up and positive and hopeful, you will stop trying to achieve perfection. And when you stop striving for perfection, you will actually do better than you thought you could.
