INTERIOR LIVING ROOM – NIGHT

SHAYNA sits on white sofa looking upset with tears running down cheek with

tissue crumpled in her hand.

INSIDE LIGHT OF REFRIGERATOR BRIGHTLY SHINING ON GIRLS FACE

ERIN calls out to her friend SHAYNA from kitchen

ERIN:

Hey, there’s Ben and Jerry’s Chunky Monkey Ice Cream and a whole new bottle of chocolate fudge…how lucky can you get?

BACK TO CLOSE UP OF ERIN ON COUCH

(has a sad puzzled look on her face)

ERIN:

Why in the world would that matter at a time like this? I can’t believe Ken chose Barbie over me! I really need to talk to you about how I’m feeling…why are you still hanging out at the fridge?

SHAYNA:

Are you KIDDING me? You don’t want any of the BEST ice cream in the world right now? It will FOR SURE make you feel better and you know that you LOVE this flavor the best!

PAN BACK TO ERIN

(wiping another tear from her cheek)

I’m not hungry…I’m upset. Don’t you understand that? How can you think of food at a time like this?

I need to talk this out with someone and you’re my best friend in the whole world and I know that you can help me through this. Get in here and out of that kitchen. When I’m hungry, maybe we’ll have some of that ice cream, okay?

QUESTION: WHAT CAN WE TAKE AWAY FROM THIS SCENARIO?

ANSWER: “NATURALLY THIN” PEOPLE FACE THEIR EMOTIONS AND FIND SOLUTIONS.

“DIET MENTALITY” PEOPLE TURN TO FOOD INSTEAD OF DEALING WITH SITUATIONS.

Many times it is not easy to face and deal with emotional turmoils. Our automatic response is to reach for food and feel instantly comforted. When we do this we are also shifting our thoughts to the food and away from whatever situation is uncomfortable at the time.

Next time something comes up for you that you are not comfortable or are upset with…ask yourself are you really hungry now or are you just not wanting to deal with and work on your problems?

With time and practice, you can learn that it really feels better to “clean house” with your emotions. Face them. Think about solutions. Reach out for help or advice. Tackling a challenging situation and working through it will feel so much better than eating when you are not truly hungry. You will accomplish something that needed to get resolved and not become numb with food that you don’t really want or need at that time.

I know that this sounds so simple and obvious but living in the “diet mentality” mode has kept us from living the life we’d like to live.

Try it…you’ll like it.
