Where has dieting gotten you? Are you comfortably at a “goal weight”? I bet not. And if you have achieved that “number”, are you able to keep that weight by living and eating everything that you love without any guilt or shame?
The first Principle of Intuitive Eating is: REJECT THE DIET MENTALITY.
This is probably one of the hardest principles to put into action because “diets” are always omnipresent. You can’t go 1 day without hearing about “this new diet” or “that new plan”. Everyone has a “magic” plan. “This one is the last diet you’ll ever have to be on”…
Putting all of your effort into “trying” this new plan really takes it’s toll. Think about it.
You pick a diet plan. You get very excited. You buy new foods. You prepare. You are so positive “this” one will work this time, for good. (of course, you wait until Monday to begin…you want to get in those “last suppers”!)
So, Monday comes. “You can do it”, you tell yourself. You are able to “follow the program” for that first day. “Yay for me” is what you feel as you end that day. “I did it”. “I’m a good person and can follow instructions”.
Second day, third day, fourth day…..it’s always a different day that you begin to “slip”. And, each time you “slip” back into “old habits”, you slowly chip away at your self esteem and self worth. Your eating should never be attached to your self worth! Just as a number on a scale should never define you.
When you can begin to reject the enviable diet mentality failure syndrome, you will begin your road to true peace with food. You will also have opened the door to the amazing world of enjoying, loving and celebrating your food and as an aside, your body will always adjust to it’s healthy, comfortable weight. You will not ever again have to put effort and equity sweat into achieving the body you desire.
Eat what you love.
Eat when you are hungry.
Stop when you are no longer hungry.
Begin today!
