We all have a beliefs closet. I believe we have to do a ‘spring cleaning’ every so often.
We actually participate in guided imagery all of the time without realizing it. When you read a book, watch the news or listen to the radio, images are going through your mind related to what you are reading or hearing.
Imagine you have a TV or movie screen showing pictures in your mind.
Now ‘see’ yourself on the screen.
Picture yourself in a MENTAL CLOSET of OLD IDEAS and THOUGHTS.
You’ve decided that it is time to clean out your closet.
You are carrying a large empty trash bag.
You look all around and see lots of hangers labeled with NEGATIVE SELF–STATEMENTS like:
“I can’t accept myself as I am”
“I can’t do THAT until I’m thin”
“I’ve NEVER succeeded before, I don’t know if I can do it this time”
and ON and ON and ON…
Begin with the most NEGATIVE THOUGHT, IDEA or BELIEF hanger first.
Reach for the hanger and DUMP the NEGATIVE THOUGHT into the trash bag.
You can tear it up, stomp on it, crumple it…just get it into the bag!
Do this for all of the hangers full of NEGATIVE THOUGHTS.
Stop for a minute after each hanger is tossed.
Really FEEL yourself STUFFING them in the trash bag.
When you have cleaned out the closet of all of the NEGATIVE THOUGHTS hangers, tie up the bag.
Watch yourself coming out of the closet with the bag and leaving the house.
A trash truck is outside waiting for your trash bag.
Watch it being tossed into the back of the truck with all of the other trash.
Listen and watch while your bag gets smashed into the truck bed.
Now get into your car.
See yourself driving right behind the trash truck following it to the dump.
You are listening to great music that you love on the car radio.
When you arrive at the smelly and dirty dump, watch the driver pull out your smashed bag.
See the bag get tossed into that ugly pile of discards.
Feel a light feeling and a sense of accomplishment.
Get back into your car and head home.
All the way home, think of POSITIVE THOUGHTS, IDEAS and BELIEFS you want to adopt.
When you get home, go directly to the empty closet.
Now, fill all of the hangers with these new POSITIVE THOUGHTS.
Stop and look around the closet and feel HOPEFUL and EMPOWERED.
Take a few deep breaths and gently close the closet door.
You may ACTUALLY want to write your NEGATIVE THOUGHTS on individual cards or paper.
Then, you can PHYSICALLY discard them.
You might choose to cut, tear or crumple the thoughts and REALLY throw them into the trash.
