resolve to make no resolutions

December 28th, 2009

new years…a time to “start over”…begin something you’ve been putting off…MAKE RESOLUTIONS!
This year I resolve to NOT make any New Year’s Resolutions. Why, you ask? Because it sets me up for failure. I don’t “do” failure very well. What usually happens is the anticipation of accomplishing or beginning something on January 1st is so huge that it always begins well. I am very positive that “this time” I can do whatever it is I’m putting on my resolution list. Obviously, I’ve wanted to do this particular thing or change for a long time but allowed myself the “privilege” to put it off until January 1st! And there you go again…another procrastination tactic. I have found that if I have to delay the beginning of something I know I have or want to do…I probably won’t have the “follow thru” to be successful. Speaking of being successful…what do you consider success? I think about this often. Can you consider yourself successful by just attempting to do something? How about repeatedly attempting to do something? How about attempting to do something, failing, and attempting it again and maybe again and again. It brings to mind that saying that a heroic act is not heroic unless it was hard and uncomfortable to do. If it was easy, it wouldn’t get the honor of being called heroic. I believe that you don’t have to be able to accomplish what you set out to do on the first or even the hundredth try. The act of setting out on the journey to take steps towards it “counts” as your big success as much as it will “count” when you fully accomplish it.
When the pressure is on, most of us will “break” and fall back into our old patterns. I take the pressure off by not actually categorizing what I want to change or accomplish as New Year’s Resolutions. I just begin to take the steps that are necessary to reach my goal. Slowly, quickly, one step forward, seventeen steps back…however it goes. If I know that each day I do something (however small) towards the change I want to see for myself, I will be successful.
Take the pressure off! Begin now on your “list” of everyday steps towards a better you!
Happy New Year and a new way of tackling your enlightenment.
