WHY do you eat?

July 15th, 2014

A group of thin people were asked: “Why do you eat”? Everyone in the group replied: “We eat because we are hungry”.

A group of overweight people were asked the same question. Their answers were long, tedious and riddled with guilt, stories and explanations; citing all kinds of reasons for their eating, none of which having anything to do with hunger.

How many times have you had around and around conversations in your head when the subject of eating comes up. A group of friends or family invite you to a movie. They tell you after the movie everyone will be going to their favorite pizza place. You immediately forgo the thought of the movie and go straight into conversations and rationalizations in your head. “Ok, I’ve been good for most of the week, so I can have a couple pieces of the pizza…No maybe I’ll just have one piece and order a salad so I can fill up on that first…Well, if I take off the pepperoni I’ll be okay…Maybe I’ll just eat 1/2 a piece…” and on and on and on.

Do you know what a naturally thin intuitive eater thinks about when faced with the prospect of movie and a pizza dinner? “Yum, pizza”!

How can they do this? How can they eat without all of those emotions attached to every bite?

Simple. (well, simple concept but one that takes a lot of practice and determination and trust). An Intuitive Eater is tuned into the signals their body is sending. They trust that they will make the right choices and satisfy their cravings and desires. If they are in the mood for something salty, crunchy, cold, hot, spicy or whatever…they will indulge in only the best of what they want. Thus allowing them to be satisfied with “just enough”. Infants are born with an innate ability to follow their own signals of hunger, taste and satiety. They will only eat what they love; only when they are truly hungry for that food; and definitely stop when they are not hungry anymore! If you attempt to feel a baby after they are no longer hungry, they will spit out what is being offered, even if they love that particular food.

We are all born with this ability. We unlearn it when we are young. Just because it is noon doesn’t necessarily mean that we are hungry for a meal. No outside source can dictate when and what we should be eating.

Honor yourself and trust that you will re-learn to listen to the signals that are inside you all day, every day.

You will enjoy your food so much more.
No more guilt.
No more self-sabotage.
Just a joyful, fulfilling eating experience.
“Try it…you’ll like it”!
Yum.
