it’s just a number on a scale

February 4th, 2010

Ok. We’ve all done it. Some do it many times a day. Some use it to judge themselves. Some use it as a yardstick of success or failure.  It can dictate what mood we will be in for that day. Others allow it to determine what we might eat or not eat. And some just see a number. I just see a number…most of the time. Believe me, it took a lot of work and there are days that I have to remind myself.

The bathroom scale, the doctor’s scale, it doesn’t matter who’s scale. Scales really should only be for fish.

Think about it. Do you really want to give that much power to an inanimate object? Seriously, it’s only a machine designed to measure the weight that’s put on it.  That’s all.

We all are so much more than that number on the scale. We are parents, caregivers, hard workers, funny, helpful, talented people. We do so many things in a day. We are so many things to so many people including ourselves. We cannot measure and establish our emotions with our weight. Our body weight will naturally go up and down.  So many things factor into why. Sometimes we retain fluid, other times we ate something salty. Too many reasons to list .

The point is to work on seeing that number as just a number. Our weight is only one in a lot of factors that determine or measure our state of heath. It shouldn’t have anything to do with the  perception we have of ourselves.

Each time you feel the need to get on that scale, challenge yourself to detach any emotional thoughts linked to the number it reads. Stay focused on your behaviors during the day, who you really are on the inside.  Have you completed the tasks that you set out to accomplish? Have you made yourself or someone else smile or laugh? Have you made a difference in someones life?  Have you listened to your intuitive needs and desires and acted on them? Have you eaten the foods that you love ,waiting to eat them until you are truly hungry for them?

How were you feeling before you stepped onto that scale? That’s who you really are. Not the number on a scale.
