Unconditional love. What a concept. Think of the warm, loving, happy feeling you get every time your pet sees you after being gone if even for a few minutes. That tail wags and wags and wags with such excitement. Right? Your furry child doesn’t care if you are old, young, fat, thin, sick, depressed, afraid, content, hungry or even if your teeth have been brushed yet. That is Unconditional Love. Do you give yourself that same treatment? Does your self talk remember that you are a wonderful, amazing person no matter what you are feeling or look like at any given moment? I know most of us treat our friends with much more grace and respect than we do ourselves. Would you ever tell a friend that you wouldn’t support them when they needed it? Of course not. We reserve the negative feelings and actions for ourselves. Why? We are the ones that will be with ourselves truly through the good as well as the hard times. When all of the doors are closed, who is always there…we are.
Think of your pets when you are doubting yourself…when you need that “shot in the arm” of courage, trust, and praise. You deserve to give yourself the best…the best food…the best encouragement…the best love…
Wag your own tail!

1 c. non-dairy chocolate chips
1/4 c. rice or almond milk (I use 1/2 rice and 1/2 almond)

or
line a 13×9″ glass pyrex dish w/parchment paper
melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat
stir in the:
peanut butter
graham cracker crumbs
and maple (or other granulated) sugar.

INTUITIVE EATING PRINCIPLE # 1
Where has dieting gotten you? How many last suppers have you had in your lifetime? Do you actually get a rush thinking about starting a new plan? You hear so much now about how “dieting” is not good and will not allow you to actually lose weight. And then you turn around and you’ll read or see a news program about the “diet that isn’t really a diet so it will work diet”. So much information. So many myths. So many stories.
We all have our own dieting history. Each one is unique. But each history has some very common treads. We all think this time is going to be the time “it” works. (never even thinking that it is “us” that will work, not the diet plan) We all gather information. We write things down. We cut out “plans” from magazines. I mean if the hip star of the moment loses weight on a particular plan, then certainly that is the one that is the best! Depending on your age, you will have realized by now that the dieting rules and miracles change with each decade. No sugar…then no fat…no carbs…oops, watch that sugar again…now it’s calories…points…whatever. What does this dieting history really tell us? There is no one way to lose and/or maintain our weight. Each individual is different.
Maybe the biggest misconception among us chronic weight controllers is that we are constantly searching for the right plan. The plan that will rid us of dieting and deprivation forever. And when we “fail“, as we inevitably do, we chip away at our self esteem and ability to trust ourselves.
The reality is that ANY type of restrictive, authoritative, dictated, time lined plan will NEVER be our end all to be all lifestyle plan. No outside source will ever be able to satisfy our individual likes, dislikes, cravings, hunger and fullness. We were all born with the Intuitive Eater inside. We need to PRACTICE LISTENING.

Think about this.
It’s true.
Test it yourself.
Watch yourself as an observer.
Don’t judge.
Just think about it.
Might you be thirsty? Or do you really crave food?
Try this exercise when you are hungry…not starving…not full…just comfortably hungry.
The first five bites of anything you are eating if you are truly hungry will taste AMAZING. Remember, you are hopefully only eating what you genuinely LOVE and the best of that food that you can get your hands on!
Take five bites.
Chew them slowly.
Savor each bite.
Feel the texture. Is it hot or cold? Crunchy or smooth. Sweet or tangy…
Put your fork or spoon down and chew slowly and completely.
Check in with your body and see what it’s feeling.
Did the fifth bite taste as good as the first?
I bet not.
With each bite, the flavor and thrill diminishes.
Push your plate away and know that if you are still truly hungry and want more…it will be there for you.
Don’t ever settle for less than the best eating experience.
When you care about yourself, you want the best for your body.
Food included.

Here’s a great idea! (at least I think it’s great and so do many of my clients)
A great way to S T R E T C H a snack or “goodie at the movies” is a lollipop. Pick the best kind and the best flavor and save the wrapper. Enjoy a little…put it away…enjoy a little more…put it away. You get the idea.
Being innovative and imaginative comes in handy when you are normalizing your eating patterns. If you have a craving for something, by all means eat it. BUT…only when you are hungry (not starving) and only the best of whatever food item it is and stop eating it when you are no longer hungry and then put it away. You can eat it again at a later time if you are hungry again and really want the same food. Eat slowly and enjoy the experience. Those few bites of an amazing food that you craved will be so satisfying that, in time, with practice and trust you will no longer call it one of your old “trigger” foods. When you begin to trust that the food you want will always be available and “legal” for you to eat, it will lose it’s allure and you will not want to overeat it anymore.
This is Intuitive Eating. No deprivation. No diet mentality. Just enjoyment and satisfaction while eating. Yum.
